WTA Toronto Station: Pegula defeated Anisimova in three sets to defend her title
On August 12, local time, the 2024 WTA Toronto Women's Singles Final concluded. Third-seeded and defending champion Jessica Pegula defeated her compatriot Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 to retain her title. This marks Pegula's third WTA1000 championship and her sixth career title, the second this season.
Previously undefeated against Anisimova, Pegula secured the opening set 6-3 after breaking early. Anisimova rallied in the second set, overcoming three break points and breaking twice to level the match 6-2. In the decisive set, Pegula dominated with five consecutive games to clinch the title 6-1.
Pegula becomes the first woman since Martina Hingis (1999-2000) to consecutively win titles in Montreal and Toronto. At the trophy presentation, Pegula remarked, "I think my grandmother is from Montreal and my grandfather from Toronto, so now I have a championship for each of you."
With the victory, Pegula earned 1,000 points and a prize of $523,485. She moved up to No. 11 in the championship rankings, re-entering the race for the Riyadh year-end finals.
