WTA Toronto: Pegula and Anisimova will stage an "American derby"

Pegula Advances to WTA1000 Toronto Final, Aims for Back-to-Back Titles

On August 12, local time, the WTA1000 Toronto women's singles final lineup was announced. Defending champion Jessica Pegula will compete against compatriot Amanda Anisimova for the championship. Pegula, seeded third, defeated the in-form 14th seed Jule Niemeier 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals, securing her place in the Toronto final for the second consecutive year.

If Pegula can clinch the title, she will become the first female player to win back-to-back championships in Montreal and Toronto since Martina Hingis achieved the feat in 1999 and 2000.

Anisimova Reaches WTA1000 Toronto Final, Becomes Lowest-Ranked Finalist in Nearly 40 Years

Currently ranked No. 132 in the world, Amanda Anisimova defeated No. 15 seed Navarro 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the semifinals. This victory marks Anisimova's first appearance in a WTA1000 level final and makes her the lowest-ranked finalist in Toronto in nearly 40 years.

Anisimova and Pegula Set for WTA1000 Toronto Final Showdown

The 22-year-old Amanda Anisimova defeated four top-20 players, including Sabalenka, Kalinskaya, Kasatkina, and Navarro, en route to reaching the WTA1000 Toronto final. After taking a nine-month break due to personal reasons last year, during which her world ranking dropped out of the top 350, Anisimova has steadily climbed back up the rankings since her return at the beginning of this year. This week, the former "genius girl" has finally shown her best form since her comeback.

In the two previous meetings between Anisimova and defending champion Jessica Pegula, Pegula emerged victorious on both occasions. However, their most recent encounter, earlier this year in Charleston, went down to a deciding set tiebreak, highlighting the competitive nature of their rivalry.

Looking ahead to the women's singles final, will Pegula successfully defend her title, or will Anisimova emerge as the surprise champion? The answer will unfold on Saturday.
