2024 U.S. Open Golf Preview: Complete schedule and highlights
The 2024 U.S. Open, the third Major of the season, will tee off from June 13 to 16 at Pinehurst Resort's Course No. 2 in North Carolina. Defending champ Wyndham Clark will face off against a roster of golf's finest.
Clark, who clinched his first Major victory last year with a narrow win over Rory McIlroy at Los Angeles Country Club, is back to defend his title. This year’s U.S. Open is sticking to its tried-and-true format of a four-day stroke play event, showcasing the world's top players like world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, McIlroy, and Brooks Koepka—the last player to successfully defend a U.S. Open title.
Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele is also in the mix. Fresh off his win at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club last month, Schauffele is eager to add a second Major to his resume. Tiger Woods, a three-time U.S. Open champion, will join the field this year thanks to a special exemption. Scheffler, who finished third last year, is riding high after winning his second Masters at Augusta National Golf Club and is gunning for his third Major.
Other contenders include Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa, Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson, Max Homa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, and Hideki Matsuyama.
U.S. Open 2024: The Field
The 156-player roster includes several who earned exemptions from the USGA, including past 10 years' champions and last year's top 10 finishers. As of June 10, players ranked in the top 60 of the Official Golf World Rankings (and ties) who didn’t have exemptions are in.
Both Olympic golf champions are swinging their way into the tournament. Tokyo gold medalist Schauffele is still hunting for his first Major win, while 2016 Rio champ Justin Rose, who won the U.S. Open over a decade ago, will be in the mix.
U.S. Open 2024: Schedule
June 13, Thursday: The first round kicks off at 6:45 AM EDT, with groups of three starting from either the 1st or 10th tee.
June 14, Friday: The second round is followed by a cut to the top 60 players (and ties) for the weekend.
June 15, Saturday: Third round starts between 8:00 and 9:00 AM.
June 16, Sunday: After the final round, the trophy presentation will take place. If there's a tie for first, a two-hole playoff followed by sudden death will determine the winner.
So, grab your popcorn, get comfy, and prepare for some top-notch golf action. Let’s hope for a drama-filled tournament and maybe even a hole-in-one or two—because if Justin Rose is around, you never know!
