Anthony Davis has a plan to win the championship this season, an analysis of the Lakers' new inside options

In the 2023-2024 season, Markkanen averaged 23.2 points per game, showing good three-point shooting ability, especially for his height of 213 cm, he mainly shoots three-pointers, and his three-point shots account for as high as 49.3%. Surprisingly, his three-point shooting percentage is 39.9%, averaging 3.2 shots per game, which makes him a top space inside player.

Similar to Kevin Love in the Cavaliers period, Love's three-point shooting accounted for 50% at the time, with a hit rate of 37.6%. Although Love's three-pointers with the ball are more threatening, Markkanen's sufficient output and efficiency still make the Lakers eager for such an inside role. The Lakers have emphasized three-pointers as the main means of attack in the past four seasons. In addition, James and Davis both focus on inside offense, making it particularly important to have a player like Markkanen who can open up space.

However, Markkanen has renewed his contract with the Jazz, and Ainge's asking price for him is not cheap, so it is not easy for the Lakers to introduce him to challenge and create conditions. In this context, the emergence of Wood becomes another possibility.

Take Wood's performance in the Mavericks as an example. He averaged 16.6 points and 7.3 rebounds in 26.9 minutes per game in the 22-23 season, which was quite efficient. Wood's advantage lies in his spatial attributes. His three-point shots accounted for 36.3% and his hit rate was 37.6%; at the same time, his defense was a shortcoming, and the opponent's hit rate increased by 2.3 percentage points when he was matched. Despite his poor defense, if Wood stays healthy and shows his previous three-point efficiency, the Lakers will be a reinforcement.

When Wood announced that he would exercise the player option to stay with the team, I think Davis undoubtedly has a strong reason to win the championship this time. First of all, the new head coach Redick is committed to three-point shooting, which means that Wood will get full opportunities in the tactical system. In addition, looking back at Davis' peak season, he averaged 28.1 points per game when he was in the Pelicans, second only to Harden and James.

The success of that season was related to excellent teammates, such as Cousins and Mirotic, who both have good three-point ability. In contrast, as a pure role player, Wood can focus all his energy on outside shooting. If he can stay healthy and play a stable spatial attribute, he will surely help Davis return to the peak of his offensive power.

Combined with Wood's offensive efficiency and defensive potential, we have reason to believe that Davis can lead the Lakers to launch a new championship impact.
