The country is stable and rising, Juventus and AC Milan are actively seeking change
Juventus: A New Era Under Thiago Motta
Juventus has turned the page with the appointment of Thiago Motta as their new head coach, following the departure of Massimiliano Allegri. Motta, a key player in Inter Milan's 2010 Champions League-winning squad, earned his coaching credentials by leading Bologna to a Champions League berth last season.
Motta wasted no time in reshaping the squad, including the surprising decision to terminate the contract of last season's starting goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, despite his strong performances. This bold move was made to make way for Monza’s Michele Di Gregorio, who was loaned to Juventus after being named the best goalkeeper in Serie A last season.
In the midfield, Adrien Rabiot left on a free transfer, prompting Juventus to invest in Brazilian midfielder Luiz and French international Khéphren Thuram, spending a combined €72.1 million. Khéphren, the younger brother of Inter Milan's Marcus Thuram and son of French legend Lilian Thuram, brings excitement to the upcoming Derby d’Italia, where the brothers will face off.
Juventus' anemic offense last season, where they managed only 54 goals, lags significantly behind the top four teams. Motta's priority is to revive their attack, focusing on unlocking the potential of striker Dusan Vlahović while offloading Federico Chiesa and Arkadiusz Milik. Juventus is also placing their faith in 19-year-old forward Kenan Yıldız, who has been handed the iconic No. 10 jersey, symbolizing their hopes for him to become the next star in Turin.
In addition to signing Timothy Weah and pursuing Porto’s Francisco Conceição to boost their attacking options, Juventus is also eyeing Atalanta’s midfield maestro Teun Koopmeiners, with negotiations reportedly nearing completion.
### AC Milan: A New Chapter with Fonseca
AC Milan has also embraced change by appointing Paulo Fonseca as their new head coach, following the departure of Stefano Pioli. Despite leading Milan to the Serie A title in the 2021-2022 season, Pioli's tactics had grown stale, prompting the club to seek a fresh approach with Fonseca, who previously coached Roma and Lille.
Fonseca inherits a squad strengthened by AC Milan's prudent yet effective transfer strategy. Last summer, Milan brought in six new players, including Christian Pulisic, Tijjani Reijnders, and Samuel Chukwueze, spending €120 million in total.
This summer, Milan's spending was more modest, totaling €51 million, with key signings including Spanish captain Álvaro Morata from Atlético Madrid, who will replace the departed Olivier Giroud. Milan also added central defender Strahinja Pavlović and right-back Emerson Royal to the roster.
Morata, a seasoned Serie A player from his time at Juventus, is expected to seamlessly integrate into Milan's attack. Meanwhile, former Real Madrid forward Luka Jović, who has shown signs of resurgence, is set to serve as Morata’s backup.
Like Inter Milan, AC Milan's backers, RedBird Capital, are keen on developing young talent for future profits. This strategy has seen Milan focus on acquiring young, promising players at reasonable prices. Whether Fonseca can balance these expectations with on-field success will be a key storyline in the new season.
