ATP Montreal: Poplin defeats Rublev to win first Masters title
On August 12, local time, the ATP Montreal Masters men's singles final came to an end. This week's "dark horse" Poplin defeated the No. 5 seed Rublev in two straight sets with 6-2/6-4, winning the ATP Masters title for the first time in his career.
The two players had met twice before. Rublev won in Vienna last year, but the most recent match was this year's Monte Carlo Masters, where Poplin won. In this game, Poplin seized the opportunity to break twice in the first set. At the same time, in his own serve, he resolved all 4 break points and took the lead with 6-2. In the second set, Poplin took the lead again to break. Although he suffered the only break of the game in the 6th game and was chased by Rublev to a score of 3-3, he quickly stabilized his position and broke again in the 7th game, and successfully won another set with 6-4, thus defeating Rublev with a total score of 2-0 and winning the championship.
Poplin won the Montreal Masters this week by defeating five TOP20 players, including Shelton, Dimitrov, Hurkacz, Korda and Rublev, and three TOP10 players. In the third round against Dimitrov, he saved three match points and won; in the subsequent quarter-finals, he reversed Hurkacz after losing the first set and being broken in the second set.
Poplin became the first Australian player to win the ATP Masters since Hewitt in Indian Wells in 2003. After winning the championship, Poplin, who won 1,000 points and a prize of $1,049,460, will be ranked No. 23 in the real-time ranking, breaking the TOP30 mark for the first time in his career.
